Glückstadt harbour with its picturesque ambience has always been a popular port of call on the Lower Elbe.
Berths
The harbour, which consists of an outer and inner harbour, can be called at any time, even at low tide.
There are floating jetties in the outer harbour directly in front of the lock. Boats can also moor at the south quay in front of the shipyard. The north side is closed to pleasure craft.
There is a 60 metre long area for passenger ships between the old ferry landing stage and the safety area on the north pier. There are no passenger stairs available. Gangways that can also be used at low water must therefore be carried.
Passenger ships are obliged to register with Glückstadt Port in advance.
Mooring at the police jetty is strictly prohibited.
The inner harbour is accessible through the barrage. It is opened ‘2 times long’ when signalled. Please refer to the following link for the opening times: Barrage opening times. The inner harbour is very quiet in pile boxes, almost in the heart of the city.
Approach
The Elbe island of Rhinplate lies in front of the harbour entrance. Coming from the north, head towards the Rhinplate-N light beacon, which is located far in front of the island on a dam that is flooded at high tide and must not be crossed for short-cutting purposes under any circumstances. The fairway to the harbour entrance is buoyed. Coming from the south, you pass the two buoys of the Glückstadt secondary fairway GN 13 (green) and GN 10 (red). The radar tower at the southern tip of the Rhinplate can be used as a reference point. The Glückstädter Nebenfahrwasser is a quiet and popular anchorage.
Shore leave
Showers and toilets are located in the basement of the ‘Alte Mühle’ restaurant in the inland harbour.
The harbour is not far from the centre of Glückstadt and therefore not far from the museum.

Founded in 1617 by the Danish king, Glückstadt can look back on a history of over four hundred years. Thanks to its immediate location on the Elbe, the harbour and fishing played an important role from the very beginning. Until the 19th century, Glückstadt was the most important harbour for Greenland traders and whaling, alongside Altona. After that, the town on the Elbe became a centre for herring fishing. The popular fish was landed here until 1976.
On the audio walk through Glückstadt, you will learn interesting and surprising facts about interesting points in our beautiful town. The audio tours of the Detlefsen Museum guide you through the sections on herring fishing and whaling and through the sections on the town's history.
You can find out interesting facts about the Jewish cemetery, which is one of the most important in the state of Schleswig-Holstein, and Jewish life in Glückstadt on the interesting tour of the cemetery under the menu item ‘Jewish cemetery’.
The app also offers a city map with a route, an overview of the audio stations and is available free of charge in the Google Play Store and the App Store.
The ‘Experience Glückstadt’ app was initiated as a joint project by the Working Group on Fisheries, the city of Glückstadt, the Detlefsen Museum and the Glückstadt Tourist Information Office and was funded as part of the EMFF development programme.
Want to plan your trip from home? You can easily download the free ‘Experience Glückstadt’ app from the Google Play Store or the App Store. For last-minute travellers, you can also download it quickly and easily on site at any time via the public WLAN network ‘Zum Glück Netz’.
